State Licensure

State licensing is an important step in your career search. Some practices (especially in the state of Texas and other states with long timelines for licensing) will not take your application seriously if you don’t have or are not in the process of applying for a license. We have done the research for you to try and help you understand the requirements, cost and timeline for each state. Cost, timeline and requirements vary greatly between states.

  • Timeline: On average, state licensing takes 8-12 weeks. However, some states can take up to 9 months!
  • Cost: On average, state license applications cost about $500. Some of the more expensive states can cost over $1,000

It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that any missing documents are sent to the Board. These subsequent documents also will be reviewed in order of receipt. However, the Board may require the applicant to attend a personal interview when, for instance, 1) the applicant has committed any acts constituting grounds for denial of license 2) the Board is in receipt of information requiring additional information or explanation from the applicant and 3) the applicant’s application is incomplete or requires further explanation.

Length of time to receive license "During the review process, applications fall into two categories: “routine” and “non-routine.”
A “routine” physician license application is one in which BOME staff find no items of concern. The Montana physician license application states that once a “routine” application is complete, a license may take up to 30 days to issue.
A “non-routine” application—in which an applicant discloses past disciplinary issues, criminal justice issues, civil proceedings or other items of concern— may take additional time to be declared “complete,” depending on how much additional information the applicant must submit and how quickly that information is delivered once it’s requested.
“Non-routine” applications, once complete, are referred to the full Board for review at a regular scheduled public meeting. Those meetings occur every two months, which can mean a more lengthy delay for the applicant."

Texas
Length of time to receive license "Average 6-9 months.
We are legislatively mandated to process all physician licensure applications in an average of 44 days once all is received. The processing time clock begins when the applicant has submitted all initial requirements and the application has passed from Pre-Licensure to Licensing. A licensing analyst is then assigned to process the application. Individual application processing time will vary according to the complexity of the application. Factors that increase complexity are ""yes"" answers to any of the Professionalism questions on the application, or graduation from a medical school not listed on the Substantial Equivalence list. Once the licensing analyst determines the application is complete, the applicant is scheduled for licensure. Currently staff issues licenses twice a month."
Misc. Notes "The Texas Medical Board is pleased to offer the new online application option for physicians called the Uniform Application for Physician State Licensure or UA. The UA, kept on file with the Federation of State Medical Boards, will benefit physicians by reducing redundancy in filling out applications when applying for licensure in multiple states, thus increasing portability.
How long it takes to complete Pre-Licensure depends on you.
41% of FY 10 licensees spent 90 days or less in Pre-Licensure.
The average for all was 134 days.
The Texas Medical board is experiencing the highest ever volume of applications at this time. We are working on acquiring more staffing resources, but due to budget constraints, the earliest that would be possible is September 2015. We are screening applications as quickly as possible, and continue to issue licenses on a regular basis. Please allow 14 days, from the date documentation was received, for processing, before calling to check on the status of information sent."
Cost "As of 9/1/2015, the fee for physician licensure in Texas is $817.00.  The entire fee must be submitted before your application can be assigned and processed. This fee does not include the registration fee, which is due and payable upon issuance of your permanent license. The Board assigns the first registration period. These vary in length from 6 to 24 months. Once the Board has issued you an official license number, you will have 90 days to register and activate your license. Failure to register will result in penalty fees, and after one year, license cancellation.
As of 9/1/2015 the physician registration fee decreased to $452.00 every two years."

Montana
